Sheffield Tree History

Old photographs of Sheffield show an enchanting living canopy over Main Street created by rows of majestic trees lining both sides of the road. Community members have expressed an interest in seeing the trees return, to enhance the character and the health of the community.

Sheffield has a rich history in town beautification. The first Village Improvement Society in the country was established here. In 1846, the town of Sheffield planted 1000 elms in double rows along Main Street. None of those trees exist today.
